ESPECIAL 2021 / SPECIAL 2021
Assinalando os 500 anos da primeira viagem de circum-navegação de Fernão de Magalhães e Elcano
Marking the 500th anniversary of Magellan and Elcano’s circumnavigation of the world

1.11 – 18:00 – BEFORE AND AFTER MAGELLAN’S VOYAGE – WORLD PERCEPTIONS AND GLOBAL IMPACTS
Public Lecture by Paulo Jorge de Sousa Pinto – only in English
The 500 years of Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage is an appropriate time to promote debate about the global significance of the journey. Public discussions on the subject are too often limited to non-historical issues and quarrels and it is time to raise some relevant approaches about the real impacts of the expedition: can we say there was “a world before and after” Magellan? What rivalry existed between Portugal and Spain and what was effectively at stake in their “quest for Asia”? How did the journey change images and representations of the Earth? Did it mark the beginning of the globalization process? These are some of the questions raised by the expedition under a comprehensive scope that can provide insightful debates and reflections for a better understanding of the past.
Paulo Jorge de Sousa Pinto is a researcher at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities (NOVA FCSH, Lisbon)
Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut, Potsdamer Str. 37, 10785 Berlin
